What the service was facing

Alder Hey Innovation describes a CEW service facing increasing demand, patient backlogs and difficulty providing sufficient face-to-face care.

NHS England selected Evira through a competitive procurement process and Alder Hey became the first UK implementation site, with a 14-week implementation trial.

Alder Hey's Quality Account states that Evira was introduced as a digital solution linked to measuring devices used at home, facilitating progress monitoring, clinician interaction and alerts or reminders, and describes the pilot as successful.

In practice

How care is delivered

  • Evira’s platform and home measuring device were integrated into the CEW patient pathway so families measure at home and the clinical team can follow BMI progress remotely.
  • Clinical users were trained by the Evira team before rollout to patients and families.
  • The trial assessed technical integration, operations and governance, and set out to produce a scalable service blueprint for other CEW clinics.
  • Alder Hey’s Quality Account describes the platform providing progress monitoring, clinician interaction and alerts or reminders, and the pilot as successful.

Measured results from the Alder Hey pathway

Clinical evaluation of Evira within the Alder Hey CEW pathway, presented at BSPED 2024 (Endocrine Abstracts 103, P124) and ESPE 2024 (ESPE Abstracts 98, P2-119). The ESPE abstract reports an initial cohort of 19 patients (average age 12.5 years, average BMI SDS +3.86 at start), with a further mean BMI SDS change of −0.012 in the second month.

Alder Hey's clinic was set up in 2021 and BBC News reported in April 2024 that it was supporting about 200 children, with a further 100 waiting.

Where these figures come from
The pilot demonstrated how remote monitoring could be integrated into an established NHS specialist obesity pathway and provided an implementation blueprint for wider CEW adoption.

Developments

Alder Hey Innovation reports that by 2022/23 more than 2,000 children and young people had received care through CEW clinics nationally, and that NHS England data showed referrals running at double the number of patients accepted.

A 2026 feasibility study in Archives of Disease in Childhood (MOTIVATE-CEW) tested integrating an exercise specialist supported by mHealth technology into the Alder Hey CEW service.
